Phoenix Sylvestris
Sylvester Palm (Silver)
It is a native to India, with a more compact appearance or presence than the larger phoenix dactylifera, nevertheless offers that same phoenix species elegance and Mediterranean appearance and flair. The leaf stem remains on trunk and when properly given the popular diamond cut can be quite decorative and artistically pleasing. The leaves are 10-15 ft long with silver or blue-green color. In our collection most are of the silver-to-silver blue display. This palm requires some maintenance trimming of old dead leaves that with time tend to make a skirt motif around the trunk which usually measures no more than 10-18 inches in diameter. The Sylvester palm produces small white flowers supported by 2-3 ft long branching inflorescence coming from among the leaves; flowers are followed by oval fruits 1″ in diameter which turn purple-black when ripe. Fruits are edible and have a sweet taste with a single seed inside.
USDA Zones 8b-11 Frost tolerant.
